The Church of Prophet Elias is an important historical and religious site in Chania. It was first built during the Venetian period as a small chapel dedicated to the Prophet Elisha. In the 16th century, a larger section was added, forming the church as it stands today.
In 1897, the church was destroyed during a military attack by the Great Powers. However, it was later rebuilt with financial support from the Tsar of Russia, who saw the explosion on a Russian warship as a warning from the Prophet Elias in response to the church’s destruction.
