The Municipal Garden is one of the most important green spaces in the city, located just steps away from both the Old Town and Chania’s busy commercial district. Established in 1870 during the administration of Reuf Pasha, the Municipal Garden of Chania was the city’s first organized public project. The Chania Municipal Garden quickly became a cherished gathering place. By the late 19th century, a theatre was constructed within the grounds, serving multiple purposes over time—including a brief period when it housed the Cretan Parliament. After World War I, the garden underwent a significant renovation, and between 1924 and 1927, the iconic Clock Tower was added. Known as the “Clock of the Garden”, it soon became one of the most recognizable landmarks in Chania’s commercial center and a popular meeting point for locals.

Today, the Municipal Garden continues to thrive as a vibrant and welcoming space. Visitors can enjoy a rich blend of greenery, from towering trees and colorful flowers to peaceful fountains. Additionally, the area includes a historic café, a playground, a small library, and the seasonal open-air cinema, known as the Cinema Garden Chania. This cinema has been operating since 1905. Finally, one of the garden’s most distinctive natural features is the impressive 150-year-old Bengal Ficus, standing as a living reminder of the garden’s long history.
