The Venetian Origins of the Egyptian Lighthouse

Reconstruction Under Egyptian Rule
In 1830, after Crete was handed over to the Egyptians by the Turks, the lighthouse was rebuilt under the direction of Mehmet Ali of Egypt. Constructed on the original Venetian foundation, it adopted a minaret-style architectural design, which is why it earned the nickname Egyptian Lighthouse. Today, the Chania Lighthouse stands 21 meters tall, with its light reaching seven nautical miles, making it one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in the world.
