A Vital Maritime Guide in the 19th Century
The lighthouse was a rotating structure that operated with oil and a fuse, making it an advanced design for its time. For sailors navigating the challenging waters of the Libyan Sea, the lighthouse of Gavdos was crucial.
To understand its importance, consider that the distance from Gavdos to the Libyan coast is around 170 nautical miles—a quarter of which could be covered under the light’s beam. It served as a beacon of safety for passing ships and a symbol of Gavdos’ maritime significance.
Life Around the Lighthouse of Gavdos
The lighthouse complex was once a small community in itself. It employed around 10 people, including caretakers and lighthouse keepers, who built houses around the structure. These homes functioned as fuel depots and living quarters, forming a lively outpost in an otherwise remote setting. This self-sustained group helped maintain one of the largest lighthouses in the Mediterranean, supporting navigation for vessels passing through southern Chania’s maritime routes.
Destruction and Modern Revival
Sadly, the lighthouse suffered heavy damage during World War II, when it was bombed and nearly destroyed. However, it was reconstructed in 2003 and today stands proudly as one of Gavdos Island’s most visited landmarks. The restored site now includes a photo museum, showcasing the history and legacy of the lighthouse, as well as a small cafeteria where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the sea and witness one of the most beautiful sunsets in Crete.
